About this place

Balsan-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 17, Gangseo, in the Archdiocese of Seoul, located at 12-27 Gangseo-ro 45da-gil in Gangseo-gu. Current official sources record August 18, 1978, as its establishment date, and the parish honors Mary, Mother of God, as its patron.

Marian devotion is an important part of the parish's identity. Since 2010 it has maintained a spiritual bond with the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, giving the church significance for local Catholics not only as a parish for Mass and the sacraments but also as a place of Marian spirituality.

History & origins

Balsan-dong Parish was established in 1978 after separation from Hwagok-dong Parish, at a time when the population and Catholic community of the Gangseo area were expanding rapidly. The current Catholic Church Directory and the parish's official information both record August 18, 1978, as the establishment date.

An older Catholic encyclopedia source, however, gives September 3, 1978, for the same parish, so the precise date is not consistent across historical sources. The public text therefore follows the current official date of August 18 while retaining the discrepancy in the research record.
