Religious house
About this place
The Seoul community of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi is a women’s Franciscan religious community living within the Archdiocese of Seoul. The Korean Catholic Directory currently lists the “Seoul community” in Jangwi-dong as a religious-house community and also gives the congregation’s abbreviation. This is not a territorial parish church but a religious house in which the sisters live their common life and prayer while carrying out the apostolate of their congregation.
The congregation’s identity, as its name indicates, is rooted in the spiritual tradition of St. Francis of Assisi and in a missionary vocation. The Jangwi-dong house is one of the congregation’s communities established in Korea and serves as a place where religious life, prayer, and apostolic service are sustained together. It is therefore best understood first as a religious community rather than by the categories normally used for a parish church.
History & origins
The Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi trace their origin to Assisi, Italy, in 1702. Catholic sources identify Fr. Giuseppe Antonio Marcheselli and Angela del Giglio as figures in the foundation of the congregation and describe a history in which Franciscan spirituality and missionary life were developed in a religious community.
The sisters came to Korea in 1980. According to a historical feature in The Catholic Times of Korea, the first members arrived at the invitation of the Korean Church and formed their first community in Jongam-dong, Seoul, beginning their religious life and apostolate in Korea. The congregation subsequently broadened its communities and apostolic foundations to other places.
A vocation notice in The Catholic Times of Korea from September 2000 already refers explicitly to the “Jangwi-dong community,” confirming that the sisters were active there by that time. The current Korean Catholic Directory continues to list the Seoul house in the same area, showing the continuity of a Seoul religious community that developed after the congregation entered Korea in 1980.
