History & origins

Apgujeong 1-dong Parish was established on February 18, 1999, when it was separated from Apgujeong Parish. It initially used the name “Apgujeong 2-dong Parish” and began its community life by celebrating its first Mass in a temporary space on March 7, 1999. As local administrative and parish naming arrangements were adjusted, it was renamed “Apgujeong 1-dong Parish” on September 21, 2001.

The newly independent parish also moved forward with plans for a permanent church. Construction began on February 19, 2001, and the topping-out ceremony was held on October 21 of the same year. From May 26, 2002, the community began using the new church, moving its liturgical life from temporary premises to a permanent worship space.

An important conclusion to the building process came with the church dedication on May 23, 2004. The period from the establishment of the new parish in 1999 to the dedication in 2004 was one in which a community separated from an existing Gangnam parish acquired its own space and identity over several years. The parish has continued its history under the name Apgujeong 1-dong and the patronal dedication of the Ascension of the Lord.
