About this place
Sejong St. Peter Parish is a Catholic community in the Gongju District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea confirms that it is an independent parish separated from Sejong St. Francis Parish. At present, the parish continues the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and small-community activities around its temporary worship space in Eojin-dong while working toward a church building of its own.
Diocesan records show parishioners gathering for a parish day at the planned church site in Haemil-dong and praying together for the construction of a new church; in 2026 parishioners also participated in diocesan formation for small-community facilitators. The present identity of this parish therefore lies not so much in a completed large church building as in a community that was established first and has continued to grow while preparing together for a permanent church in the expanding city of Sejong.
History & origins
Sejong St. Peter Parish was established on January 21, 2021, by separation from Sejong St. Francis Parish. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records both the date of establishment and the mother parish, showing that the parish emerged as the pastoral territory of Sejong St. Francis was subdivided again in response to the continuing growth of Sejong City.
After its establishment, the community continued liturgical and pastoral life as an independent parish while pursuing the long-term task of building a church of its own. On May 18, 2025, it held a parish day at the planned church site in Haemil-dong, offering communal prayer and the principal Sunday Mass and sharing the hope of constructing a new church. This milestone shows that community formation and preparation for a permanent church, rather than a completed church building, have been central stages in its history.
The parish has continued to strengthen its organization, including participation in diocesan small-community formation. The available official sources do not yet provide a sufficiently firm basis for stating a later groundbreaking or completion date, so those stages should not be asserted. The history that can presently be verified runs from the 2021 separation and establishment, through the formation of the parish in temporary pastoral facilities, to its continuing preparation for a new church in Haemil-dong.
