About this place
Sejong St. John Catholic Church is the church of Sejong St. John Parish in the Gongju District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, with St. John the Apostle as its patron. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records it as an independent parish separated from Sejong St. Francis Parish. It serves as a local center of faith in the newer districts of Sejong, including the Saerom-dong area, where Catholics continue their life of faith through the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
The bulletin of the Diocese of Daejeon records the Rite of Acceptance for catechumens, ongoing catechetical formation, and baptisms at the parish. This shows that Sejong St. John is not merely a religious facility in a new city but a parish where newly arrived residents can take root in a Catholic community and learn the faith. Visitors can best understand it as a living local parish of the Gongju District under the patronage of St. John the Apostle.
History & origins
Sejong St. John Parish was established on August 19, 2015, by separation from Sejong St. Francis Parish. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea clearly records both the date of establishment and the mother parish. Sejong St. Paul Parish became independent on the same day, making the division part of a broader process in which pastoral care for the rapidly expanding new districts of Sejong was distributed among several local parishes instead of one.
A 2018 account of the mother parish, Sejong St. Francis, states that the community had spun off both Sejong St. Paul and Sejong St. John and supported the construction of their churches. Sejong St. John therefore took root as a separate community under the patronage of St. John the Apostle and began to carry on its own liturgical and pastoral life within a newly developing residential district of Sejong.
After its establishment, the parish continued to grow through catechesis for catechumens, baptisms, devotional groups, and community activities. Records from 2025 show that the Rite of Acceptance and catechetical formation for new catechumens were still being conducted. The history of Sejong St. John can thus be seen as a process in which a parish born through subdivision in response to population growth steadily built a pastoral base where new residents could take root in a Catholic community.
