About this place

Sehwa Parish belongs to the eastern urban district of the Diocese of Jeju and has Saint Francis of Assisi as its patron. It currently serves Handong-ri, Pyeongdae-ri, Sehwa-ri, Sangdo-ri, Hado-ri, Jongdal-ri, and Songdang-ri, linking several villages of eastern Jeju within one parish community. The faithful gather here for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

The Sehwa Catholic community existed for many years as a mission station before being elevated to a parish as the local community grew. For that reason, Sehwa Parish is not simply a recently created parish; it is the result of a mission-station tradition that continued under the jurisdiction of Seongsanpo and later Gimnyeong before developing into an independent parish. It is also an example of how the living areas and Catholic communities of rural and coastal eastern Jeju became organized within the parish structure.

History & origins

The Sehwa Catholic community was established in September 1973 as Sehwa Mission Station under Seongsanpo Parish. At that time, Catholics in Sehwa and neighboring villages of eastern Jeju practiced their faith not as an independent parish but as a mission-station community belonging to Seongsanpo.

As the parish structure of eastern Jeju changed, the jurisdiction of Sehwa Mission Station also changed. On January 29, 2004, responsibility was transferred from Seongsanpo Parish to Gimnyeong Parish. The mission community itself continued, but the mother parish to which it was pastorally connected was different.

With the further growth of the local Catholic community, Sehwa Mission Station was elevated to Sehwa Parish on April 20, 2021. The elevation gave the community its own parish territory and marked a new stage for a local Catholic life that had continued for decades as a mission station.

The sequence from the mission station’s foundation in 1973, through the change of jurisdiction in 2004, to parish elevation in 2021 shows how a small local community in eastern Jeju developed over a long period into an independent parish.
