About this place
Sajik Catholic Church (사직성당) is a parish in the Geumjeong District of the Catholic Diocese of Busan, serving Catholics in the Sajik and Oncheon living area of Dongnae-gu through Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life. The official Catholic directory of Korea lists St. Stephen, the first martyr, as its patron and records the presence of the Sisters of the Holy Word in the parish.
Having St. Stephen as patron presents witness to the Gospel and the faith of the martyrs as important spiritual signs for the community. A separate parish, Sajik Daegun Catholic Church, is located nearby and has a similar name, but Sajik Catholic Church is an independent parish with its own history and community. Visitors should distinguish these two communities when understanding the present parish structure of the Geumjeong District.
History & origins
Sajik Parish was established on December 3, 1977, with St. Stephen as its patron. It began as an independent parish of the Diocese of Busan and today belongs to the Geumjeong District. As the Catholic community in the broader Sajik area grew, a separate parish, Sajik Daegun, was established nearby in 1994. The presence of the two parishes reflects the subdivision of pastoral structures as the local Catholic population developed.
The official directory clearly gives Sajik Parish’s establishment date, patron, and present affiliation, but it does not provide a detailed explanation of the parish from which it was originally separated or of the construction history of its first church. Those points are therefore not inferred. The establishment of Sajik Parish in 1977 and of neighboring Sajik Daegun Parish in 1994 provide two verifiable reference points for understanding the development of Catholic parish life in the Sajik area.
