About this place
Sajik Daegun Catholic Church (사직대건성당) is a parish in the Geumjeong District of the Catholic Diocese of Busan, where Catholics in the Sajik area of Dongnae-gu gather for Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life. The official Catholic directory of Korea lists St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron. The word “Daegun” in the parish name itself makes clear that Korea’s first priest and martyr saint stands at the center of the parish’s spiritual identity.
Because another parish named Sajik Catholic Church exists in the same broader Sajik area, the two similarly named churches are distinct and independent parishes. Sajik Daegun has its own name and community identity centered on St. Andrew Kim and functions within the Geumjeong District as a parish responsible for the liturgical, sacramental, catechetical, and communal life of local Catholics.
History & origins
Sajik Daegun Parish was established on July 15, 1994, with St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron, and it developed as an independent parish community within the Geumjeong District of the Diocese of Busan. Because Sajik Catholic Church also exists separately in the same broader area, the establishment of Sajik Daegun reflects the growth and subdivision of parish communities within the Sajik living area.
The Diocese of Busan recorded that parishioners marked Sajik Daegun’s Parish Day in 2013 with a pilgrimage to Darakgol Holy Site, and it also documented a Parish Day event in 2017. These records show a community that continued to strengthen its identity through pilgrimage and parish commemorations after its establishment. Detailed official records of the original territorial division and construction of the first church building have not been located, so those elements are not reconstructed by inference.
