About this place

‘오송성당’ is the parish church of a Catholic parish in the Diocese of Cheongju and is the center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for Catholics in the 오송 area. The Diocese of Cheongju identifies the parish’s patronal title as the Queen of Angels. Unlike a shrine or a facility of a religious institute, a parish church is the pastoral center where Catholics of a defined local area share the ordinary life of faith.

Catholic community life has long been present in the 오송 area, and ‘오송성당’ now gathers the present parish community within that local continuity. Visitors can understand it not only through its historical chronology, but above all as an active parish church where local Catholics share faith through Mass and the sacraments and where different generations and parts of the local community meet.

History & origins

The Catholic community in the 오송 area took shape before the establishment of the parish itself. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea reports Catholics in the area before 1907, with 명원당 mission station recorded in 1911–1912 and 벌미 mission station in 1918–1919. These communities passed through the jurisdiction of 장호원 and 감곡 Parishes and came under 청주본당 after it was established in 1932.

After the Korean War, the Catholic population around Cheongju increased and plans were made to divide existing pastoral territories. In May 1960 the Church secured a site in 오송, and the parish was established on September 8 of that year, with Fr. Michael Zunno appointed as its first pastor. A church and rectory were subsequently provided, and in 1963 the parish acquired a convent building and invited the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, further establishing its pastoral structure.

the parish also cared for mission communities in the surrounding rural area. 사곡 and 옥산 공소s were established in 1963, followed by further adjustments to the parish’s network of outstations. 옥산 in particular was raised to the status of a parish and separated from 오송 in June 1997. This development shows how 오송 grew from a local center into a parish that helped support the maturation and eventual independence of neighboring Catholic communities.
