History & origins

The Oryu-dong Catholic community traces its beginning to April 20, 1957, when a mission station was established under Sosa Parish. Jurisdiction was transferred to Dangsan-dong Parish in 1965, and Oryu-dong became an independent parish on September 23, 1968.

The first church was completed and blessed on December 21, 1968, soon after the parish was established. As the Catholic population and the surrounding area grew, a larger church became necessary. Construction began in March 1977, was completed in September 1978, and the new church was dedicated that same month.

Pastoral and meeting facilities were subsequently expanded, including a parish hall in the 1980s. The progression from mission station to independent parish and then to a community with its own larger church and pastoral facilities defines the main course of Oryu-dong Parish’s history.
