About this place
The package entry “Namcheon-dong Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church” is a parish of the Jecheon district in the Diocese of Wonju and is listed in the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea as Namcheon-dong Parish. Its patron is the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and it serves as a local center where Catholics in central Jecheon continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community. The package also contains a separate “Namcheon-dong Catholic Church” entry at the same address. Comparison with the official parish name and patron shows that the two entries refer to the same place and that “Sacred Heart of Jesus” identifies the patron rather than a separate parish.
Namcheon-dong Parish is one of the long-established centers of Catholic life in the Jecheon area and continues to link the parish with Catholics in the surrounding community. It is therefore important to understand the place not merely as a church building but as a parish, a Catholic community with its own pastoral jurisdiction. The church stands on a site shaped by a long local history of faith while remaining a living place of Mass, the sacraments, prayer, and fellowship today. In particular, although the official parish name is “Namcheon-dong,” its patron is the Sacred Heart of Jesus; therefore, a map or record using the name “Namcheon-dong Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church” should not be understood as referring to a different parish. Recognizing this naming relationship helps avoid treating the same place as two separate institutions.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Jecheon first developed as the Jecheon mission station of Yongsomak Parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that the community was raised to parish status on July 14, 1940, beginning as “Jecheon Parish.” After liberation, in October 1947, the parish acquired a former Japanese-owned house in Namcheon-dong, converted it into a church, and had it blessed, thereby establishing a stable parish base in Namcheon-dong.
As the number of Catholics increased, construction of a new church began in 1955, and the building was blessed on June 6, 1956. With the growth of Catholic communities in the Jecheon and Danyang areas, Danyang Parish was separated in 1957, and the community in the Uirim-dong area was later divided off in the 1960s. Through these changes the parish came to be established under the name Namcheon-dong Parish and became one of the mother parishes from which several Catholic communities in the Jecheon area developed.
In 1970 the parish opened Seongmo Kindergarten, broadening its educational apostolate. During the 1980s it strengthened parish life through an education hall, a parish bulletin, and community events. In 1990, the fiftieth anniversary of the parish, it also compiled a record of its first half-century.
As the older church aged and pastoral needs changed, a new church was built and dedicated on December 10, 1992. This history shows that Namcheon-dong is not simply the site of an old church building; it developed with the growth and urban changes of Jecheon, moving from a mission station to a parish and then becoming a center from which other Catholic communities emerged. The successive parish divisions and expansion of facilities also reflected the reorganization of pastoral structures as Jecheon’s Catholic population and urban living area grew. Namcheon-dong’s history is therefore not merely an account of buildings within one parish, but is tied to the broader process by which the Catholic community of Jecheon developed into several parishes with differentiated pastoral roles.
