About this place

Mukdong Catholic Church is a parish of District 7, Dongdaemun-Jungnang, in the eastern region of the Archdiocese of Seoul. It was established on September 8, 1975, and is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.

The community developed rapidly from a mission station as housing and population expanded in Mukdong during the 1970s. It continues to serve local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life, and is a clear example of parish growth accompanying the urban expansion of the Jungnang area.

History & origins

Population growth and housing construction in Mukdong in the early 1970s rapidly increased the number of Catholics served by Sangbong Parish. Land for a church was secured in August 1974, a hall was built in September, and the Mukdong mission station was formally established on September 30.

Continued evangelization and growth led to its elevation as Mukdong Parish, separated from Sangbong, on September 8, 1975. The church and rectory were blessed in 1976. As a larger church became necessary, new construction began in 1978 and the new church was completed and dedicated on April 22, 1979.
