History & origins

The Korean Catholic Directory records June 1, 1953, as the establishment date of Hwaseongdae parish. Read together with the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's account that the military chaplaincy system in the Korean armed forces began in earnest in 1951, this places Hwaseongdae among the Air Force parishes founded in the early period of Catholic military ministry in Korea.

A 2018 record of the Military Ordinary's activities includes a visit to Hwaseongdae Catholic Church, and the 2025 Military Ordinariate clergy appointments again list the pastorate of Hwaseongdae as a separate post. The combination of a foundation record from the early 1950s and more recent Church records shows that the parish, which began during the formative period of the military chaplaincy system, has continued for a long period as an independent pastoral unit.
