About this place
Hwarang Catholic Church is an Army parish of the Military Ordinariate of Korea in Hongcheon-eup, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon State. The Korean Catholic Directory lists Hwarang parish at the same address and names Saint Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron.
As a military parish, it provides a place where Army personnel serving in the Hongcheon area can continue participating in Mass and the sacraments and remain part of a faith community within unit life. By supporting Catholic practice while taking account of military mobility and a life organized around the unit, the parish helps service members sustain their faith in circumstances different from those of an ordinary territorial parish.
History & origins
The Korean Catholic Directory records February 27, 1967, as the establishment date of Hwarang parish. This provides a clear point of reference for the establishment of an independent Army military parish in the Hongcheon area in the late 1960s.
The parish name “Hwarang” and its pastorate continue to appear in later Church records. The 2025 Military Ordinariate clergy appointments again list the pastor of Hwarang as a separate post, showing that the parish itself has endured over a long period despite the regular rotation of military chaplains.
