Heukryong Catholic Church is a Navy parish of the Military Ordinariate of Korea in Baengnyeong-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon. The Korean Catholic Directory lists Heukryong parish at the same address and names Saint Marius as its patron. An official Military Ordinariate personnel notice identifies the church as the parish of the 6th Marine Brigade.
Within the living environment of a military unit on Baengnyeong Island, the parish helps service members continue participating in Mass, receiving the sacraments, and receiving faith formation. For personnel serving on an island, an on-base Catholic community provides a foundation for regular liturgical life, and Heukryong Catholic Church serves as a pastoral center connecting the Catholic members of the 6th Marine Brigade.
History & origins
The Korean Catholic Directory records August 26, 1980, as the establishment date of Heukryong parish. The present parish in Baengnyeong-myeon is confirmed under the same name, address, and Navy affiliation within the Military Ordinariate, allowing the foundation record to be securely connected with today's Heukryong Catholic Church.
The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of the military chaplaincy support association records that in November 1990, when the association resumed providing vehicles to military churches, it delivered one jeep to Heukryong Catholic Church on Baengnyeong Island. This is a concrete record showing that Church-wide support for the parish's military apostolate continued around the tenth year after its establishment.
Heukryong has continued thereafter as an independent parish of the Military Ordinariate. The 2025 clergy appointments list the pastorate of Heukryong separately, while the ordinariate's official 2024 appointments likewise show it as a distinct parish assignment. Records from different periods demonstrate the continuity of the parish's pastoral structure.
