History & origins

The Korean Catholic Directory records August 8, 1977, as the date on which the Naval Academy parish was established. From that point, an independent military parish structure took root within the academy, and a community under the patronage of the Virgin Mary continued to develop.

The church facilities were substantially renewed in the late 1990s. According to the Catholic Times, construction of a new church began on March 23, 1997, and continued for about one year and five months. On August 12, 1998, the new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop John Baptist Jung Myung-jo, then Ordinary of the Military Ordinariate. The three-story building placed the rectory and convent on the first floor, the church on the second, and the choir loft on the third; the former church was remodeled for use as an education building.

The project was supported by the military chaplaincy support association and other benefactors. By reorganizing both liturgical and educational space, the new facilities broadened the physical foundation for worship, formation, and community activity among cadets and service members.
