About this place
Marine Central Catholic Church is a Navy parish of the Military Ordinariate of Korea in Bongdam-eup, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do. The Korean Catholic Directory lists it under the Navy section of the ordinariate and names Saint Francis Xavier as its patron. The same parish name and address are consistently identified in the Catholic directory.
As a military parish for the Catholic life of the Marine Corps community, it provides a place where service members can continue attending Mass, receiving the sacraments, and belonging to a faith community during military service. By offering a stable setting for Catholic life to personnel whose living environment changes with assignments and unit life, it exemplifies a role of military chaplaincy distinct from that of a territorial parish.
History & origins
The Korean Catholic Directory records that the Marine Central parish was established on July 31, 1994. This indicates that a military parish for the Marine Corps community in the Hwaseong area had become established as an independent pastoral unit by the mid-1990s.
Marine Central has continued thereafter as a distinct parish name within the Military Ordinariate. The 2025 clergy appointments again list the pastorate of Marine Central separately, showing that the parish's pastoral structure has continued despite the regular rotation of military chaplains.
