About this place

Yeongsan Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan in the Masan district, serving Yeongsan-myeon in Changnyeong-gun together with Gyeseong-myeon and Jangma-myeon. The diocese’s official parish guide names St. Francis of Assisi as its patron. Its regional role is important because it provides a common center where Catholics scattered across a broad rural area can remain connected through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

Unlike long-established urban parishes, Yeongsan became an independent parish relatively recently, so its present function of gathering Catholics from Yeongsan, Gyeseong, and Jangma into one pastoral unit is itself central to understanding the place. Visitors can therefore see it less as a site defined by an old monument or distinctive historic building and more as a living local parish of the Diocese of Masan that sustains ordinary liturgical and communal Catholic life across the southern part of Changnyeong.

History & origins

According to official sources of the Diocese of Masan, Yeongsan Parish was established on January 19, 2021. The diocesan chronology also records the creation of Yeongsan among the parish expansions of that year, allowing the date to be cross-checked. This was not simply the renaming of an already independent parish; it was a reorganization that brought Catholics in Yeongsan-myeon, Gyeseong-myeon, and Jangma-myeon together as a distinct pastoral unit and launched them as an independent parish.

The new parish took St. Francis of Assisi as its patron and was assigned pastoral responsibility for the three areas in southern Changnyeong. The official record is still brief, and this research did not locate separate primary documentation for the detailed construction history of the church or for the development of any predecessor mission stations. For that reason, unverified prehistory has not been added; the documented establishment of the independent parish and the definition of its territory are the central milestones that can presently be stated with confidence.

The significance of Yeongsan Parish’s history lies less in a long list of events than in the recent expansion of the Diocese of Masan’s pastoral network. By forming a new parish for several rural areas of Changnyeong-gun, the diocese created a closer framework for sacramental life and community activity, and that act of independence became the starting point for the identity of Yeongsan Catholic Church today.
