About this place
Yaro Mission Station is a mission station of the Diocese of Masan in Yaro-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, and its present name and location are confirmed in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea. The history of Hapcheon Parish in the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia also records Yaro as a mission station connected with the parish, serving as a local center where Catholics in northeastern Hapcheon could maintain community life despite the distance from the parish church.
Although a mission station is a smaller community than an independent parish, in a rural area it provides a practical place where believers can pray together and remain connected with parish ministry. Yaro is notable for records showing that its mission buildings were repeatedly improved as the community maintained its shared space. It is therefore better understood not simply as an old small church but as a place that local Catholics continued to shape according to the needs of their community. The specific building chronology is treated separately in the history account. Because both the current Catholic directory and older parish records identify Yaro as a mission station, it can be regarded not as a temporary gathering place but as a faith site continuously remembered and maintained within the mission-station ministry of the Hapcheon area.
History & origins
The history of the buildings leading to the present Yaro Mission Station is documented in the history of Hapcheon Parish. In November 1969, during the pastorate of Fr. Simon Hyeon Gi-ho, assistance from the diocesan office made it possible to secure a 100-pyeong site and construct a 17-pyeong mission building. This is the first clearly documented point at which the Yaro community acquired a dedicated mission space.
The facilities continued to grow after the initial construction. In June 1971, a 10-pyeong annex was added to support the life of the mission community. The change shows how a small rural mission station gradually developed beyond a single room for worship into a place able to support gatherings and other forms of community life. The construction of a separate annex also suggests that the mission station had to support an ongoing local community rather than serve only as an occasional place for liturgy.
After decades of use, a much larger change followed. In August 2000, Hapcheon Parish demolished the old Yaro mission building, constructed a new one, and celebrated its blessing. In May 2002, the mission station was expanded again. These records show a local Catholic community maintaining its mission function by repairing, rebuilding, and enlarging its shared space as needs changed over time.
The present Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea still lists Yaro as a mission station of the Diocese of Masan. The sources are not sufficient to establish the very first origin of the community, but from the late 1960s onward they provide a relatively clear sequence of land acquisition, construction, an annex, rebuilding, and expansion, allowing the physical development of Yaro Mission Station to be traced with confidence.
