About this place
Uiryeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan, assigned to Area 3 of the Masan District, and serves as a center for the liturgical and faith life of Catholics around Uiryeong-eup. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists Christ the King as its patron and records that the parish also cares for mission stations attached to it, confirming its role as a local pastoral center.
To understand this place, it is important to see not only the church building but also the parish community. A parish is a basic local unit of the Catholic Church where Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and communal life are sustained. Uiryeong Catholic Church has carried out this role in the Uiryeong area, providing a place where local Catholics remain connected with the wider Church within the pastoral structure of the Diocese of Masan.
History & origins
Uiryeong Parish was established on January 6, 1966. At that time, the Uiryeong area was still under the Diocese of Busan, and the official history of the Diocese of Masan lists Uiryeong among the last parishes founded during the Busan period. This shows that the parish community was established first and was then incorporated almost immediately into a newly created diocesan structure.
On February 15 of the same year, Pope Paul VI erected the Diocese of Masan by separating it from the Diocese of Busan, and on May 31 Bishop Stephen Kim Sou-hwan was installed as the first diocesan bishop. Soon after its foundation, Uiryeong Parish thus became part of the new diocese and served as a pastoral base for Catholics in the inland Uiryeong area of Gyeongsangnam-do.
The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea continues to record Uiryeong as a parish founded in 1966, with Christ the King as its patron. Detailed primary sources for the earliest construction work or later changes to parish facilities were not sufficiently available in this research, so they have not been added. Within the verified evidence, the history of Uiryeong Catholic Church can be understood as that of a parish whose beginning nearly coincided with the birth of the Diocese of Masan and whose life has continued within the local community ever since.
