About this place
Sinwon Mission Station is a mission station of the Diocese of Masan in Sinwon-myeon, Geochang-gun, and its present name and location are confirmed in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea. Unlike an independent parish, a mission station provides a nearby place where Catholics scattered across a broad area can gather for prayer and maintain their life of faith. In a mountainous and rural setting, Sinwon can therefore be understood as a local center that keeps believers connected with one another and with the pastoral structure of the diocese.
The entry for Geochang Parish in the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia also records Sinwon as one of the mission stations in the Geochang area, showing that the local Catholic community has long been sustained through the relationship between parish and mission stations. Because specific jurisdictional and operational arrangements can change over time, however, the most accurate way to introduce the site to visitors is to emphasize its verifiable present identity as a mission station of the Diocese of Masan.
