About this place
Sinan-dong Catholic Church is the parish church of a community in the Sinan and Pyeonggeo area of Jinju, within the Jinju District of the Diocese of Masan. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea classifies the community as an independent parish, with Our Lady of Perpetual Help as its patron. As a parish church, Sinan-dong is more than a building in which Mass is celebrated: it is the pastoral center where local Catholics receive the sacraments, take part in the liturgy and catechesis, and sustain parish community life.
Having grown together with the surrounding residential area, Sinan-dong holds particular meaning as the everyday gathering point of the Catholic community in western Jinju. Visitors will understand the place more accurately if they see both dimensions at once: the parish community that carries pastoral responsibility within the Diocese of Masan and the church building used by that community, rather than treating it simply as an isolated architectural site. Devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the parish patron, is also an important sign of the community's spiritual identity apart from the geographical name of the parish.
History & origins
The origins of Sinan-dong Parish are closely tied to the development of the Pyeonggeo residential district in Jinju. According to the official history of the Diocese of Masan, continued housing development brought a growing population and more Catholics into the area, expanding the territory and straining the space of the existing Bonggok-dong Parish. Plans were therefore made to establish a new parish. In November 1988, land was purchased for a church site, but the property was later taken under the city's development plan, creating an early setback.
After these difficulties, Sinan-dong Parish was separated from Bonggok-dong Parish and established on June 28, 1991. The new community began with 373 households and 998 Catholics, and its first pastor, Fr. Thaddeus Hwang Chang-geon, began the work of providing a church. Before a church building was available, Sunday Mass was celebrated at Bonggok-dong Church, while weekday Masses were held in an apartment being used as the rectory.
To secure a usable worship space as quickly as possible, a temporary building was completed on February 23, 1992, and the first Mass was celebrated there. The faithful then took an active role in raising funds for the permanent church, visiting nineteen parishes in the Archdiocese of Seoul and three parishes in the Diocese of Masan on Sundays to seek support. Because the new community could not easily finance the church by itself, this became a process of building the needed foundation through solidarity with other parishes. It shows how a parish in a rapidly expanding residential district acquired its physical base through cooperation within and beyond the diocese.
The effort culminated in the dedication of the new church on June 6, 1994. The sequence from urban development to temporary worship spaces, parish fundraising, and finally the construction of the church makes Sinan-dong's history a clear example of how a new Catholic parish community was formed and established in response to the expansion of the city.
