Silmae Mission

The official history of Sancheong Parish does not give a separate date for the first establishment of Silmae Mission Station, but it explicitly names Silmae among the thirteen mission stations under the parish when Sancheong was elevated from a mission station to a parish on December 20, 1965. This confirms that a Catholic mission community already existed at Silmae by that point and came under the pastoral care of Sancheong Parish. The date should not be presented as the “founding date” of Silmae itself, but it is an important documentary benchmark.

Sancheong Parish began with responsibility for mission stations scattered across the county. Alongside Silmae, the official history lists Sancheong, Yajeong, Jangjuk, Saengbiryang, Wonji, Sina, Dangye, Bangmok, Jayang, Sangjung, Saengcho, and Songgang. This shows that early parish ministry in Sancheong was not concentrated in a single church but organized as a network linking multiple rural communities, and the history of Silmae should be understood within that wider structure.

No official chronology was found that documents in detail the construction, relocation, or renovation of the Silmae mission building after that period. The present Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea, however, still lists Silmae as a mission station of the Diocese of Masan in the same area, confirming the community's present existence. Within the limits of the surviving documentation, Silmae can therefore be described as one of the small rural communities that have formed part of Sancheong's pastoral network since at least the period when the parish was established.
