About this place
Seokjeon-dong Catholic Church is the parish church of a Catholic parish in the Masan district of the Diocese of Masan, serving as a center for the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics in Seokjeon-dong and the surrounding part of Masanhoewon-gu, Changwon. The Catholic Directory of Korea and diocesan records identify it as one of the current parishes of the Masan district, providing Catholics in the urban Masan area with a local place to continue their life of Mass and the sacraments.
Today the parish gathers around its church and pastoral spaces for Sunday liturgy, the sacraments, catechesis, devotional life, and service. Parish life extends beyond attendance at Mass as generations and parish groups learn the faith together and care for their neighbors through community activities. Located within the residential and commercial life of Masanhoewon-gu, Seokjeon-dong Catholic Church is best understood not only as a building, but as a neighborhood center where Catholics know one another, share their faith, and sustain the life of the parish community.
History & origins
The establishment of Seokjeon-dong Parish began as part of the Diocese of Masan’s response to Catholic growth in the Masan area and the increasing size of the Cathedral Parish of Yangdeok-dong. After plans for new parishes in Guam-dong and Hoewon-dong, the diocese also prepared a parish in Seokjeon-dong, purchasing a former factory site in Seokjeon 1-dong and establishing the parish in June 1991. Fr. Andrew Kim Gil-sang arrived as the first pastor on July 10.
Catholics were transferred into the new parish from Yangdeok-dong, Hoewon-dong, and Sangnam-dong, followed in August by additional members from Namseong-dong Parish. Because there was no permanent church at first, the community rented the basement of a gymnasium and celebrated its first Mass there on July 28, 1991. A blessing of the temporary church followed on September 29. A diocesan parish feature also recalls that the community began by adapting a factory building for temporary worship.
Work toward a permanent church gained momentum with the formation of a building committee in 1993. Parishioners carried out various fundraising efforts, and construction advanced further after Fr. Pascal Hwang Byeong-seok arrived in 1994. The new church was finally dedicated on June 25, 1997, giving the community a stable liturgical home after its years in temporary spaces.
In 2010 the parish boundaries were readjusted with Yangdeok-dong Parish, and in 2011 Seokjeon-dong marked its twentieth anniversary. This chronology shows a parish born from urban population changes, sustained by parishioners’ fundraising and service, and gradually established as a stable Catholic community in the Masan area.
