About this place
Sarim-dong Catholic Church is a parish in Area 2 of the Changwon District of the Diocese of Masan, serving Catholics in Sarim-dong, Bongnim-dong, and nearby neighborhoods of Uichang-gu, Changwon. The Catholic directory names St. Francis of Assisi as its patron. Although it is a relatively recent parish, it was established as a full parish to bring Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation closer to Catholics in an already developed urban community.
A distinctive feature of Sarim-dong is that, from the time of its foundation, the church was planned with the pastoral needs of an aging society in mind. Bansong Parish, which promoted the division that created the new parish, planned the church in close connection with a professional nursing hospital so that elderly Catholics and retired priests could receive spiritual care alongside practical support. This background shows that Sarim-dong was conceived not simply as another territorial subdivision, but as a parish seeking to connect the Church’s pastoral mission with concrete needs for care in the local community.
History & origins
Sarim-dong Parish was promoted as the city of Changwon grew and the pastoral territory of Bansong Parish expanded to the point that a new parish was needed. Bansong Parish planned not only a new church in Sarim-dong but also a concrete pastoral response to an aging population through cooperation with a professional nursing hospital. The concept was to allow a hospital to be built in connection with the church site so that elderly Catholics could receive medical and spiritual care in close proximity.
While this plan was being developed, the Diocese of Masan formally established Sarim-dong Parish on December 22, 2014. Diocesan parish information defined the new territory as all of Sarim-dong and Bongnim-dong together with parts of Yongho-dong, Bonggok-dong, and Banji-dong. From the beginning, therefore, the parish was shaped not only by the division of an existing community but also by attention to the demographic structure of a new urban area and the needs of elderly Catholics.
The original planning remains an important background for understanding the parish. The idea of organically linking a church with a nursing hospital and even providing care space for retired priests represented an effort to broaden parish architecture into a setting where pastoral ministry and community care could meet. The current Catholic directory now confirms Sarim-dong as an independent parish of the Changwon District, continuing the life of a community formed under the patronage of St. Francis of Assisi.
