About this place

Sangjung Mission Station is a Catholic mission-station community in Chahwang-myeon, Sancheong-gun, within the Diocese of Masan, continuing its faith life in connection with Sancheong Parish. The Catholic Directory of Korea currently lists Sangjung as a mission station of the Diocese of Masan, and the records of the establishment of Sancheong Parish also identify Sangjung as one of the mission stations under its care.

Located in a mountainous rural area away from Sancheong-eup, Sangjung provides a nearby center where local Catholics can pray together, celebrate Mass, and remain connected with the parish. Its significance lies not in having the broad organization of an independent parish, but in sustaining the everyday faith life of a small local community. The present mission-station building is also a visible sign of a community that has maintained Catholic life in the area over a long period.

History & origins

The exact year in which Sangjung Mission Station was first established cannot be determined from the sources currently available. Diocesan records do show, however, that Sangjung was among the thirteen mission stations under Sancheong when Sancheong Catholic Church was elevated to parish status in December 1965. This confirms that a Catholic mission-station community already existed in Sangjung by at least 1965.

Sangjung continued thereafter within the pastoral care of Sancheong Parish. In 2007, a new mission-station building was completed in Sangjung-ri, Chahwang-myeon, and was dedicated on November 16 in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Ahn Myeong-ok of the Diocese of Masan. According to a record in the Catholic Peace Newspaper, the new church stood on a 565.3-square-meter site and had a floor area of 40 square meters, providing a new place for the liturgy and gatherings of Catholics in the mountainous area.

The Catholic Directory of Korea continues to list Sangjung Mission Station in Chahwang-myeon, Sancheong-gun, as a mission station of the Diocese of Masan. The verifiable chronology therefore centers not on the still-unconfirmed beginnings of the community, but on its documented existence under Sancheong Parish in 1965 and the dedication of a new mission-station building in 2007.

These records show that Sangjung has maintained a small Catholic community for a long period within the parish network that serves the broad Sancheong area. Earlier sources will be needed to determine its precise origins, but its continuity for more than half a century as a mission station connected with the parish is historically clear.
