About this place
Paryong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan serving the Paryong-dong area of Uichang-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. The Diocese of Masan describes it as the first parish church in the diocese to be established inside a commercial building. The sanctuary, rectory, and various meeting rooms are arranged within the same building, giving the parish a distinctive urban form quite different from a church on a separate traditional parish site.
Paryong-dong Parish is a local center where Catholics in a densely developed part of Changwon continue Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. In the current diocesan organization it belongs to the second area of the Changwon district and shares pastoral responsibility for the broader urban living area with neighboring parishes. The conversion of commercial premises into a fully functioning parish complex is an example of adapting Catholic parish space to an urban environment, and understanding this spatial character helps explain the present appearance and identity of Paryong-dong Catholic Church.
History & origins
Paryong-dong Parish was established on January 2, 2007, after being separated from Jungdong Parish. The Diocese of Masan records it as the first parish in the diocese to be located inside a commercial building. The first Mass was celebrated on February 10 of the same year, beginning the liturgical life of the new parish community.
Although the parish initially used the commercial space that had been secured for it, substantial interior work was needed to provide the functions required of a parish. In November 2008 the community moved temporarily to another worship space while the existing interior was demolished and rebuilt over about ten months. According to the diocesan record, the overall premises covered about 667 pyeong, with about 466 pyeong devoted to the church area, and the project arranged the sanctuary, rectory, and a variety of meeting rooms within the complex.
The construction was supported not only by members of the new parish but also by its mother parish, Jungdong, and by priests and Catholics from Changwon’s first and second pastoral areas. Neighboring communities therefore took part in helping the new parish establish a space of its own. This cooperation culminated in the dedication of the new church on September 12, 2009. The formation of Paryong-dong Parish shows how a community separated from an existing parish adapted limited urban premises to pastoral needs and, with the cooperation of the local Church, established an independent parish base.
