About this place
Myeongseo-dong Catholic Church is a parish in Area 2 of the Changwon District of the Diocese of Masan, serving Catholics in and around Myeongseo-dong through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The Catholic directory records the parish as established in 1991 and names the Holy Family as its patron.
The parish was formed during the growth of planned-city Changwon by separating territory from nearby parishes including Bansong and Jungdong. Its church developed not only as a liturgical space but also as a place with an educational dimension, and from the early years the parish operated Seongmo Kindergarten, linking the local education of children with parish community life. The patronage of the Holy Family also fits a parish identity that gives special meaning to family faith and communal care. Myeongseo-dong is therefore best understood as an urban parish where worship and formation have grown together.
History & origins
The establishment of Myeongseo-dong Parish took shape with the growth of western Changwon in the late 1980s. In November 1989 the Diocese of Masan purchased about 2,277 square meters of land for a church in the Myeongseo-dong area, and in September 1990 the Changwon District pastoral council agreed to proceed with the project. Construction funds were raised collectively by parishes in the district in proportion to their Catholic populations.
Around the diocese's twenty-fifth anniversary in late June 1991, Myeongseo-dong became an independent parish, separated from Bansong and Jungdong. Father Benedict Jang Byeong-uk arrived as the first pastor, but because neither a rectory nor a permanent church was ready, he initially stayed at Bansong Parish and Mass was celebrated in a rented private house. The temporary chapel was later moved once more while preparations for the new church continued.
Because the purchased site was legally designated for a kindergarten, the diocese planned the basement as church and meeting space and the first floor as a kindergarten. Ground was broken on October 26, 1991; the building was completed and dedicated in June 1992. A rectory and convent were completed in February 1993, and Seongmo Kindergarten opened the following month. The early history of Myeongseo-dong is distinctive for combining the creation of a new urban parish with a practical solution that integrated worship and education on a site originally designated for a kindergarten.
