About this place

Myeongnye Shrine is one of the principal martyr shrines of the Diocese of Masan. It is the birthplace of Blessed Mark Shin Seok-bok and the site of the first parish in what is now the diocese. The Catholic directory officially lists it as the Shrine of Blessed Mark Shin Seok-bok, while the Diocese of Masan describes Myeongnye as a spiritual home and source of faith for the diocese. Its distinctive character lies in the way the memory of a Catholic village near the Nakdong River ferry, the witness of martyrdom, and the history of an early parish are layered in one place.

The shrine today includes the historic Church of the Assumption, the memorial church of Blessed Mark Shin Seok-bok, a Marian garden, and other spaces devoted to the martyr's memory. The older church preserves the atmosphere of early Catholic life, while the newer memorial church invites pilgrims to contemplate the life and witness of the beatified martyr. Within a single shrine, visitors encounter the memory of a Catholic village, the beginnings of the local Church, a martyr's testimony, and the continuing devotional life of present-day pilgrims.

History & origins

Catholics fleeing persecution settled near the Nakdong River at Myeongnye and formed a Catholic village. Mark Shin Seok-bok, born there in 1828, was arrested during the Byeongin Persecution, taken to Daegu, and martyred in 1866 after refusing to abandon his faith. The Catholic community of Myeongnye grew on this foundation of martyr witness and became an important pastoral center in the region by the 1890s.

Diocesan sources record the establishment of a parish at Myeongnye in 1896, the fourth parish in the Yeongnam region and the first within the territory of today's Diocese of Masan. Its first pastor, Father Lawrence Kang Seong-sam, was the third Korean priest and the first ordained on Korean soil; he ministered at Myeongnye until his death in 1903. Father Gwon Yeong-jo later built a tiled-roof church in 1928. It was severely damaged by a typhoon in 1935, and in 1938 a smaller church was reconstructed on the site; this building survives today as the Church of the Assumption.

Modern development of the shrine accelerated in the late 2000s. In 2008 the diocese began organizing a project to preserve and develop the old church and the area of Shin Seok-bok's birthplace, and in 2010 it acquired the birthplace and surrounding property. The old church was designated a Gyeongsangnam-do Cultural Heritage Material in 2011, recognizing both its religious-historical and architectural value.

Mark Shin Seok-bok was beatified by Pope Francis in 2014, and the diocese continued developing the shrine, dedicating the memorial church of Blessed Mark Shin Seok-bok in 2018. His relics are enshrined in the Resurrection Chapel. Myeongnye's history thus connects a persecution-era Catholic village and martyrdom with an early parish, preservation of the old church, and modern shrine development, showing how the Diocese of Masan has come to remember and present the roots of its faith.
