About this place
The Masan Carmelite Monastery Retreat House is a retreat and prayer house in the Diocese of Masan where the Discalced Carmelite tradition of contemplation is shared with the faithful. The Catholic directory classifies it as a diocesan retreat and prayer house and identifies the Carmelite Order's Masan Monastery as the religious community responsible for it. Connected with the life of the monastery, it is also a place of apostolic service where people seeking retreat and spiritual help can encounter the Carmelite tradition of prayer.
Carmelite life is centered on the Liturgy of the Hours, Mass, and contemplative prayer. A Catholic Times feature on the Masan monastery explains that the friars maintain this religious life while also serving through retreat guidance, confession, and spiritual lectures. The retreat house is therefore not simply a lodging facility but a place that helps visitors examine their lives and faith in silence and prayer and experience Carmelite spirituality.
History & origins
The Korean men's Carmelite community began in 1974 with a foundation Mass in Seoul. A Catholic Times overview of contemplative orders in Korea explains that, after the first community was established, the Carmelites continued forming members and expanding their houses, and in 1989 they opened a novitiate in Masan. This is among the earliest public references that clearly establishes the local foundation from which today's Masan monastery and retreat house developed.
The Masan community gradually served not only as a place of formation for friars but also as a place of retreat for other Catholics. A 2001 Catholic Times notice already refers to the “Masan novitiate retreat house” as a location for a Carmelite vocation retreat. This shows that by the early 2000s the Masan community was using its facilities both for internal formation and for retreat ministry.
A 2020 feature on the monastery describes a life centered on contemplative prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours, and Mass, together with apostolates such as retreat guidance, confession, and spiritual lectures. The current Catholic directory also lists the site separately as the Masan Carmelite Monastery Retreat House. Public sources do not establish the exact opening date of the retreat house or a building-by-building chronology, so its history is best presented through the verified sequence of the 1989 Masan novitiate and the later consolidation of retreat ministry.
