About this place

Manggyeong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Jinju District in the Diocese of Masan, serving Catholics in the southern part of Jinju through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The Catholic directory records the parish as established in 1998 and names St. Paul Chong Hasang, one of the Korean Martyrs, as its patron.

The parish was created to share the pastoral burden of Chilam-dong Parish, which had a wide territory and a large Catholic population. Manggyeong-dong therefore differs from older parishes that developed from long-standing rural mission stations; it is a relatively modern parish formed through urban growth and parish division in Jinju. Under the patronage of St. Paul Chong Hasang, it keeps alive the memory of Korea's martyrs while enabling Catholics in residential neighborhoods to participate in liturgy and community life close to home.

History & origins

Manggyeong-dong Parish began as the Catholic population of Jinju grew and the large territory and membership of Chilam-dong Parish needed to be divided. According to the diocesan history, parishes across Jinju contributed to fundraising for a new parish site, with additional diocesan support making it possible to secure the present property. Before the division, Chilam-dong Parish even organized its pastoral council with members from both the future Manggyeong-dong and Chilam-dong areas so that the new community could begin without a pastoral vacuum.

Construction of the church began in the autumn of 1997. Parishes in Jinju shared the cost, and Catholics from Okbong-dong Parish also helped prepare furnishings for the new church. Work was completed the following June, and parishioners were assigned to the two parishes according to territory. The process was therefore more than a simple administrative split: the wider Church in Jinju prepared together for the birth of a new community.

On June 25, 1998, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church and Bishop Park Jeong-il presided at its dedication. The Catholic directory records the same date as the parish's establishment. Manggyeong-dong thus illustrates the way the Church in Jinju responded to urban and Catholic population growth in the 1990s through shared funding, diocesan support, and careful pastoral preparation before an independent parish was launched.
