About this place
Jinyeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan located in Jinyeong-eup, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, and serves as a central place for the Catholic community of Jinyeong within the diocese’s Changwon district. It is a local center of Church life where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community activities are carried on, and its present name and location correspond to the official parish information published by the Diocese of Masan.
The Catholic community of Jinyeong grew in connection with the older currents of faith in nearby Myeongnye and Samnangjin. The Diocese of Masan includes Jinyeong-eup among its territory in Gimhae-si, and Jinyeong appears in the diocesan parish structure as a parish of the Changwon district. For this reason, Jinyeong Catholic Church can be understood not only in its present role as the parish of an 읍 community, but also as a place that preserves the memory of a local Church formed through the movement and evangelizing efforts of lay Catholics across the living area linking western Gimhae and southern Miryang.
History & origins
The background of Catholicism in Jinyeong is closely connected with the faith community of nearby Myeongnye. According to the Diocese of Masan, Catholicism took root in Myeongnye after Simon Kang moved there from Gokmok in Changwon-gun in 1870. A mission station was established in Myeongnye in 1897 and for a time developed into a parish. Myeongnye later became a mission station of Masan Parish, was raised again to parish status in 1926, and after Samnangjin Parish was established the Jinyeong area continued its Catholic life within that pastoral network.
The faith community in Jinyeong itself began to take visible shape around 1924, when the seven-member family of Simon Park Su-chang, who had been baptized at Jeongsan-ri Mission Station in Changwon-gun, moved to Cheolha-ri in Jinyeong. They continued their Catholic life under the jurisdiction of Myeongnye and then Samnangjin parishes. After Fr. Park Deok-no arrived at Samnangjin Parish in 1931, a mission station was established that autumn in the home of Benedict Kim Gu-ha in northern Jinyeong-eup, where the first Mass was celebrated.
As the community became established, an 18-pyeong wooden building with a galvanized metal roof was erected in western Jinyeong-eup in 1932, giving the mission station a more permanent form. The move from meetings in a private home to a dedicated mission-station building provided a stable base for regular Mass and community life. On June 16, 1935, Jinyeong Mission Station was established as a parish and independent parish ministry began. The progression from the relocation of one Catholic family, to a mission community, and finally to a parish shows how the history of Jinyeong Catholic Church was built on lay mobility, evangelization, and the steady accumulation of local pastoral life.
