About this place

Jinrae Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan in the Changwon district, serving the Catholic community of Jinrae-myeon, Gimhae, around the Mass and the sacraments. The directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea lists Jinrae as a parish of the Diocese of Masan and records the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron. In the township area of western Gimhae, it has particular importance as a local center that keeps Catholics connected with the wider Church.

The present parish is the result of a local Catholic community that continued for many years as a mission station, then developed through quasi-parish status into a parish. Today it supports the everyday faith life of local Catholics through liturgy, catechesis, fellowship, and service and serves as the center of the Catholic community in Jinrae-myeon. Visitors can appreciate the place more fully by understanding it not simply as a church building, but as a place where the faith of several generations in a mission community developed into a parish community.

Unlike a large urban parish, Jinrae carries deeply in its present identity the history of local Catholics who sustained their own community through a long mission-station tradition. The life of faith practiced in the parish today rests on that accumulated local community experience, making this continuity one of the most important contexts for understanding Jinrae Catholic Church.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Jinrae began with Catholic families who moved into the area in the 1930s. According to the Diocese of Masan, the family of Seo Jong-man moved to Cheonggok village in Songjeong-ri, Jinrae-myeon in 1932, followed by other Catholic households that formed the basis of a local community. In 1945 the community began mission-station services in a former Japanese school residence. After a period of meeting in different Catholic homes, it was formally established in March 1957 as a mission station of Jinyeong Parish.

As the community became more stable, a mission chapel was secured in 1970, and in 1977 the site of the present church was purchased. Construction of a new mission chapel began in 1987 and a one-story church was completed in November 1989. Building on decades of mission-station life and preparation by local Catholics, Jinrae was elevated to quasi-parish status in 1998, allowing a resident priest to serve the community; Father Hwang Byeong-seok Pascal became the first pastor.

During the quasi-parish period, a parish council, catechetical programs, a Sunday school, and various devotional and service groups became established. As the community grew, the church was expanded in 2002. The general history of the Diocese of Masan records that Jinrae was elevated to full parish status in 2009. Its history is thus the development of a small gathering of Catholic families through temporary mission sites and a formal mission station into a quasi-parish and finally a parish, shaped by decades of effort to build both a physical place and a stable community.

After elevation to quasi-parish status, the community continued to improve both its facilities and organization step by step. A church-expansion committee was formed in January 2002, construction began in February, and priests and parishioners themselves worked at the site. On March 31 of that year, the community celebrated Easter Mass in the expanded church. This process shows that the self-sustaining community tradition developed during the mission-station years continued through the quasi-parish period.
