Franciscan Religious Order

About this place

The community of the Order of Friars Minor in Agyang, Hadong, is listed in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea as the La Verna Friary / Hermitage of Agyang. This designation clearly identifies the site as a monastic place for the common life, prayer, solitude, and contemplation of friars rather than primarily as an ordinary territorial parish or public parish church.

The name “La Verna” evokes an important spiritual symbol in the Franciscan tradition, but the essential point for this specific place is its current official identity as a Friars Minor friary and hermitage. Resident friars form a community and continue a life of prayer and religious observance here, distinct from the territorial functions of a parish responsible for all Catholics in a local area. Visitors should therefore understand it less as an ordinary church destination and more as a Franciscan place dedicated to silence, contemplation, and community life.
