About this place

Hogye Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan located in Naeseo-eup, Masanhoewon-gu, Changwon. It is the parish community where Catholics of the Naeseo area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship, and the diocese identifies Mary, Mother of God, as its patron. Set within the residential and apartment districts that have grown across Naeseo, the church serves as a local pastoral center where Catholics can continue liturgical and community life close to their everyday surroundings.

In the diocesan account, Hogye is remembered as a parish whose growth was sustained from the beginning by the voluntary generosity and participation of its members. A memorial stone on the approach to the church and stories preserved by the community recall how an initial donation of land became a legacy of sharing passed from one generation to the next. Today Hogye continues this communal character through parish groups and activities that help members welcome and remain connected with one another.

History & origins

Hogye Parish began as Jungni Mission Station under Sangnam-dong Parish. In April 1969, Veronica Lee Gwi-yeon built a structure on land she owned and began holding mission-station services with fellow Catholics, giving the local community a concrete place in which to gather. This small mission, made possible through a layperson's donation, became the starting point for the growth of the Catholic community in Naeseo.

The community continued to secure a stronger base. In 1981, farmland in Hogye-ri was donated, and the present church was later built on that land. As part of the Diocese of Masan's twenty-fifth anniversary, Jungni Mission Station was elevated to parish status, and Hogye Parish formally began on June 28, 1991, taking Mary, Mother of God, as its patron. Father Remigius Kim Sang-jin was appointed the first pastor.

As the parish grew, construction of a new church became necessary. Ground was broken for the present church in November 1997, and the building was completed on November 25, 1998. Apartment complexes and new residents rapidly increased around the parish, expanding the Catholic population and creating the need for another parish in the area.

Parishioners contributed in many ways to raise funds for the church and for a new community, and one result was the separation of Samgye Parish in January 2004. The movement from a donated mission-station site to an independent parish, a new church, and eventually the creation of another parish shows how strongly lay participation shaped the history of Hogye Catholic Church.
