About this place
Hoewon-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan in Hoewon-dong, Masanhoewon-gu, Changwon, serving as a local pastoral center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Set within the residential area at the foot of Muhaksan, the church gives local Catholics a place close to everyday life where they can continue liturgy and prayer, and it forms part of the parish network of the Masan district.
Diocesan accounts emphasize that from its earliest period, the Hoewon-dong community actively participated in securing a church and building parish life. The memory of beginning in a small temporary place for Mass provides a background for understanding the parish as something its members built together. The sense of ownership and welcome highlighted in a diocesan feature shows that Hoewon-dong Catholic Church is sustained not simply as a building but as a community through the participation and relationships of its members.
History & origins
Hoewon-dong Parish was established on January 26, 1981, after being separated from Sangnam-dong Parish. At the time, 405 registered Catholics were transferred to the new parish. Because there was not yet an independent church, a temporary chapel was set up in the Catholic Welfare Center, where Mass was celebrated. The parish community thus took shape while the Hoewon-dong area itself was developing into a more established residential district.
Father Joseph Bae Jong-seop of the Maryknoll Missioners was appointed the first pastor. According to a diocesan account of the community, the parish began in difficult circumstances, centered in part on Catholics living in the Hwaran housing area of Gyobang-dong. Parishioners organized a building committee and took part in fundraising and practical work for a church. The period when Mass was celebrated in a temporary hall remains an important memory of the parish's beginnings.
After Father Bae laid the foundations of the parish and returned to his community in the United States in June 1985, pastoral care passed to priests of the Diocese of Masan. The history of Hoewon-dong is therefore not that of a community formed after a large facility was completed, but of Catholics who first gathered in temporary space, continued the liturgy, and gradually built the church and parish structure together. That beginning helps explain the parish's lasting emphasis on participation and shared responsibility.
