About this place

Hapcheon Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan located in Hapcheon-eup, serving as a central place where Catholics of the Hapcheon area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Hapcheon is an inland region whose villages are widely dispersed among mountains and waterways, so the parish church provides an important point of connection not only for Catholics in the town center but also for surrounding rural communities. The diocesan parish listing and historical account clearly show that Hapcheon has long functioned as an established parish serving this area.

Its significance lies in more than simply being an old parish. Diocesan records show a community that grew from a small gathering of believers into an independent parish, with the donations and participation of local Catholics playing an important part in that development. Today Hapcheon Catholic Church continues on that accumulated foundation of faith as a place of liturgy, formation, and fellowship, and as a visible center linking the Catholic community of Hapcheon-gun.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Hapcheon traces its beginnings to around December 1922. After Martha Lee, the mother of Simon Kang Se-hyeon, entered the Church, she offered the sarangbang of her home as a mission gathering place, and a local community began to take shape. At first it continued its evangelizing activity as a mission station belonging to Munsan Parish, with a small room in a private home rather than a purpose-built church serving as the center of Catholic life.

As the community became more established, Father Joseph Jeong Su-gil of Jinju Parish, today Okbong-dong Parish, visited the mission around November 1925 and celebrated its first seasonal confession service. As the number of Catholics increased, the need for a dedicated mission building grew. Using land donated by Kang Se-hyeon, the community completed a mission building in 1931 and held its dedication, gaining a more stable base for parish life.

This growth culminated on May 22, 1932, when the Hapcheon mission station was elevated to a parish. The path from a small gathering in a family home to a mission building and then an independent parish shows how the voluntary participation and donations of local Catholics formed an essential foundation for the community. The history of Hapcheon Catholic Church thus records how a Catholic community in a broad mountainous region created a stable place for faith and developed into an organized parish.
