About this place
Hadong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan in Area 4 of the Jinju District, serving Catholics centered on Hadong-eup through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life. The Catholic Directory in Korea lists St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as the parish patron. In the Hadong area, where the Seomjin River and rural and town life meet, the parish serves as a local center where Catholics gather regularly for the liturgy and continue the life of faith.
Its present role is to provide a stable center for the ordinary faith life of local Catholics. Around the parish church, the faithful celebrate Mass and the sacraments, continue catechetical and devotional life, and form a connected community across the wider Hadong area. Visitors can best understand Hadong Catholic Church not simply as a building but as a center of local Church life and as a starting point for encountering the continuity of Catholic faith that has taken root in Hadong and continues today.
History & origins
The documented history of a Catholic mission community in Hadong begins in 1916, when Fr. Stephen Kim Yang-hong of Munsan Parish established the Hadong mission station in Seogyo-dong, Hadong-eup. At that time the community was not an independent parish but lived under the pastoral care of Munsan Parish, gathering as a mission station where a priest visited to celebrate Mass and the sacraments. The establishment of this mission station was important because it gave Catholics scattered across Hadong a regular center in which to gather.
When a new parish was established in Jinju in 1925, jurisdiction over the Hadong mission station passed to that parish, the predecessor of today’s Okbongdong Catholic Church. The mission community also changed its place of gathering in response to local circumstances. Diocesan records state that in 1941 it moved from Seogyo-dong to Haeryang-dong and later moved again to the present site. Through these changes of jurisdiction and location, the faithful maintained the mission community and continued preparing for the day when Hadong County would have its own parish.
A direct impetus for elevation to parish status came from Bishop John Choi Jae-seon of the Diocese of Busan and his pastoral policy of establishing one parish in each county. Under this policy, the Hadong mission station came to meet the conditions for becoming an independent parish. According to the Diocese of Masan, it was elevated to parish status in December 1965, while the Catholic Directory in Korea records the establishment date as December 27.
Roughly half a century after the first mission station was established, the Hadong community became an independent parish. This change meant moving beyond a mission-station system dependent on visiting clergy from an outside parish and gaining a local center for resident pastoral ministry and full parish community life. The central historical pattern is therefore not a single building event but the sequence of establishing a mission station, changing jurisdiction and location, and sustaining a long local desire for an independent parish.
