About this place

Hadaedong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan in Area 2 of the Jinju District, serving Catholics in eastern Jinju through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The Catholic Directory in Korea records the Holy Trinity as the parish patron and currently lists no mission station under the parish. Located close to the urban residential area, it functions as a local pastoral center where Catholics can sustain the ordinary practice of their faith.

The present character of Hadaedong Parish is meaningful as an example of the Church establishing a new pastoral base in response to changes in population and residential development. Along with the liturgy and sacraments, the parish supports faith formation for different generations and various devotional and community activities, serving as a center of relationships for Catholics in eastern Jinju. Visitors can therefore view it less as a historical monument than as a living local parish and, through it, understand how the pastoral structure of the Diocese of Masan developed alongside the growth of the city.

History & origins

The beginnings of Hadaedong Parish lie in Sangpyeongdong Parish’s plan to establish a second church in anticipation of the growth of eastern Jinju. Fr. Ignatius Choi Yong-jin, who became the second pastor of Sangpyeongdong in 1982, considered the expansion of the city and the prospects for development in eastern Jinju and proposed the following year that land be secured and funds raised for a second church. With the agreement of lay leaders and parishioners, preparations for a new pastoral center began in earnest.

In October 1985, while land readjustment was under way in Hadae-dong, Sangpyeongdong Parish purchased a 508.9-pyeong site at 321-6 Hadae-dong for the second church. In 1986, Fr. Anselmo Kim Yong-ho became the third pastor of Sangpyeongdong and advanced the building project with help from the Sangpyeongdong community, several parishes in the Jinju District, and the diocesan curia. In May of that year a working committee for the Hadaedong church project was organized, with Rogerio Kang Hui-sin appointed chairman, bringing the plan into a concrete stage of implementation.

As the Catholics who would belong to the new church participated in fundraising and preparations, the diocese approved the establishment of Hadaedong Parish in September 1986. At the time, the new parish territory included Hadae-dong, Chojeon-dong, part of Sangdae 2-dong, and the Deogui and Gabang mission stations. Diocesan records list 271 parish households with 832 Catholics and 41 mission-station households with 137 Catholics, for a total of 314 households and 969 faithful in the new community.

Hadaedong thus became the 46th parish of the Diocese of Masan. The process was not simply a project to erect a church building; it was a reorganization intended to share the pastoral burden of Sangpyeongdong Parish and establish an independent Catholic community in a newly developing part of eastern Jinju. The parish foundation can therefore be seen as the result of the diocese, neighboring parishes, and lay Catholics working together on land acquisition and building preparations in response to urban change.
