About this place

Hacheong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan in Area 2 of the Geoje District and serves as a center of faith for Catholics in Hacheong-myeon, northern Geoje, where they celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechetical and community life. The Catholic Directory in Korea lists St. Joseph, Guardian of Families, as the parish patron. Although the community is not large, a diocesan parish feature describes parishioners maintaining the liturgy and fellowship through the choir, the bereavement association, small Christian communities, and devotional groups.

Because it is situated where the daily life of northern Geoje meets a region with many travelers, Hacheong Catholic Church also provides a place of prayer for Catholics visiting the area. The parish is characterized less by large-scale facilities than by a family-like community and a spirituality attentive to family life under the patronage of St. Joseph. Visitors can understand it as a small local parish that sustains the ordinary faith life of residents in northern Geoje while also remaining welcoming to Catholics from outside the area.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Hacheong began as a mission station before it became a parish. According to a diocesan parish feature, the Hacheong mission station opened in 1955 under Jangseungpo Parish and became a focal point for local Catholic life. Because it was not yet an independent parish, its pastoral life remained connected with Jangseungpo. As the population and parish structure of Geoje changed, the mission station’s jurisdiction also changed in stages.

When Gohyeon Parish was established in 1975, Hacheong came under its jurisdiction, and after Jangpyeong Parish was created in 1994 it became a mission station of Jangpyeong. The local Catholic community continued to maintain the mission station through these changes. As parishioners experienced the difficulty of traveling to Jangpyeong and the local community grew, the need for an independent church and parish in Hacheong became increasingly apparent.

Preparations for parish status began in earnest in 2013. The diocesan account states that a groundbreaking ceremony for a new church was held in the autumn of that year. Members of the mission community raised building funds by selling local products such as bamboo shoots, citron tea, and seaweed, and by visiting parishes throughout the diocese to seek support. These efforts were more than fundraising; they expressed the participation of a community long dependent on other parishes in preparing its own independent pastoral center.

The new church was dedicated in July 2014 in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Francis Xavier Ahn Myong-ok. In December of the same year, Hacheong was separated from Jangpyeong Parish and elevated to full parish status; the Catholic Directory in Korea records the establishment date as December 22. The roughly six decades from the opening of the mission station in 1955 to parish status show how Catholics in northern Geoje maintained their community through changes of jurisdiction and eventually established an independent pastoral center close to home.
