About this place

Gyeonghwa-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the third area of the Changwon District of the Diocese of Masan, located on Chungjang-ro in Jinhae-gu, Changwon. The Catholic directory records its establishment on December 27, 1965, and names Christ the King as its patron.

The parish grew from a Catholic community that had already existed in the Jinhae area during its mission-station period. Today it serves as the local pastoral center where Catholics of Gyeonghwa-dong gather for Mass, the sacraments, prayer, and faith formation. Its long experience as a mission community before becoming a parish is an important part of its local identity.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Gyeonghwa-dong emerged with the establishment of a mission station around 1934. After liberation in 1945, U.S. military chaplain Father Drake visited and assisted the local Catholics. In October of that year, Gyeonghwa Mission Station was merged with Jungang Mission Station on the site of today's Jungang-dong Church.

When Jungang Mission Station was raised to parish status in March 1946, Gyeonghwa was separated again as a mission station. The community spent several years without its own building, then purchased a former financial-association building in 1953 and celebrated its first Mass there in March.

As the mission community grew, preparations for parish status continued, and Gyeonghwa-dong Parish was finally established on December 27, 1965. Its path from early mission station, through merger and separation, to a permanent worship space and independent parish reflects the changing Catholic landscape of Jinhae.
