About this place
Goseong Catholic Church is a parish in the first area of the Geoje District of the Diocese of Masan, located on Jungang-ro in Goseong-eup, Goseong-gun. The Catholic directory records its establishment on May 14, 1939, and names St. Michael the Archangel as its patron. With several mission stations under its pastoral care, it serves as the center of Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life for Catholics in Goseong.
The local Catholic community grew through a mission-station period under several different mother parishes before becoming an independent parish. Having endured war, relocation, and rebuilding while maintaining its community, Goseong Catholic Church carries a local history marked by continuity and recovery.
History & origins
The direct predecessor of Goseong Parish was Giwol-ri Mission Station. It belonged to Hwangri Parish, established in June 1935, until growth of the local Catholic community led to its elevation as a parish on May 14, 1939. Hwangri then became a mission station of the new Goseong Parish, and Father Bernard Seo Jeong-do arrived as the first pastor.
The parish soon needed a larger worship space and renovated a building in Songhak-dong for use as a church. It then passed through the turmoil of the final colonial years and the Korean War. During the war, the church was used as a medical post by North Korean forces, and parishioners buried sacred objects to protect them, although only some survived intact.
After the war the community pursued relocation and rebuilding. Following several attempts to secure a suitable site and with diocesan assistance, a new church and rectory were completed on June 16, 1957. The movement from mission station to parish, wartime suffering, and postwar reconstruction forms the central arc of Goseong Parish's history.
