About this place
Geoje Catholic Church is a parish in the second area of the Geoje District of the Diocese of Masan, located on Dongsang 2-gil in Geoje-myeon. The Catholic directory records its establishment on June 15, 1935, and names “Queen of Heaven and Earth” as its patron. With several mission stations under its pastoral care, it serves as a center for Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation for Catholics in southwestern Geoje.
Catholic life on Geoje Island reaches back well before the parish's formal establishment, into the nineteenth century. Because today's parish and its mission communities continue that older regional tradition, Geoje Catholic Church has significance beyond the single church building itself.
History & origins
Catholic history on Geoje predates the formal parish. The diocesan history records that, before the Byeongin Persecution, Father Ridel visited Geoje Island with his catechist Gu Thaddeus to evangelize. It identifies Stanislaus Yun Sa-u, who settled on the island while escaping persecution, as a key figure in establishing the local Catholic foundation.
As the community grew, Father Robert Kim Bo-rok visited Geoje in 1887 and established a mission community. The following year Yun Sa-u's son, Joseph Yun Bong-mun, was arrested and martyred in Jinju. The Catholic presence survived persecution and spread as mission stations were formed in several parts of the island.
On this regional foundation, the present Geoje Parish was formally established in 1935; the Catholic directory gives June 15, 1935, as the establishment date. The parish's history is thus rooted in nineteenth-century evangelization, mission communities, and the memory of martyrdom before developing into a twentieth-century parish structure.
