About this place
Geochang Catholic Church is a parish in the third area of the Jinju District of the Diocese of Masan, located on Changnam 1-gil in Geochang-eup. The Catholic directory records its establishment on June 29, 1940, and names the Immaculate Heart of Mary as its patron. With several mission stations under its care, it serves as the center of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for Catholics across the Geochang area.
The parish community includes mission stations such as Gajiri and Gajo. At the parish's 2023 anniversary celebration recorded by the diocese, Catholics from parish neighborhoods and mission stations took part together, showing how Geochang Parish serves not only the town church but a wider network of local Catholic communities.
History & origins
The direct predecessor of Geochang Parish was Jungdong Mission Station, established in 1935. According to the diocesan history, Father Andrew Yu Heung-mo, then pastor of Hapcheon Parish, took a particular interest in pastoral work in Geochang and helped arrange the purchase of a traditional Korean house in Jungdong, Geochang-eup, where a mission station was established.
As evangelization became more active and the community showed the potential to grow into a parish, the mission station was raised to parish status in 1940. Father Matthias Park Dong-jun became the first pastor, and the Catholic directory records June 29, 1940, as the parish establishment date.
With diocesan support, the first pastor acquired the site where the church now stands, built a church, and provided a rectory. This marked the transition from a small mission community to an independent parish and laid the foundation for the broader pastoral center that now serves Geochang and its mission stations.
