The building served for many years as a center of diocesan administration and apostolic activity. Today it functions as a diocesan facility for retreat and prayer. Its significance lies not only in its present use but also in the layers of diocesan administration, education, and faith activity accumulated there over decades.
History & origins
As the Diocese of Masan built up its administrative foundations, it planned a Catholic Culture Center combined with diocesan offices in 1969. With limited finances, the diocese received support through partnerships formed in 1971 with Catholic organizations in Austria and the Diocese of Graz, secured a site in Odong-dong, and began construction in 1972.
Construction was completed on May 31, 1974. On June 21 the temporary diocesan offices in Wanwol-dong moved into the new center, and a dedication ceremony later that October established the Catholic Culture Center as a center of diocesan administration.
The current Catholic directory lists the Odong-dong Catholic Culture Center as a diocesan retreat and prayer house. Its development from a culture center that also housed diocesan administration into a continuing prayer and pastoral facility is central to the building's history.
