About this place

Masan Monastery of the Discalced Carmelite Order is a men's religious community in Jindong-myeon, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon. The Catholic directory identifies it as a Carmelite monastery in the Diocese of Masan and separately lists the Masan Carmelite Monastery Retreat House at the same address as a retreat and prayer house.

Carmelite religious life is centered on contemplative prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours, and Mass, joined with work and apostolic service. A Catholic Times feature on the Masan community describes the friars' morning and evening periods of contemplative prayer and their ministries of retreat guidance, confession, and spiritual lectures. The site is therefore both the home of a religious community and a place where visitors can encounter the Carmelite contemplative tradition through retreat and spiritual accompaniment.

History & origins

The Discalced Carmelite friars established roots in Korea in 1974. Catholic Times reports that Korean priests completed Carmelite formation and studies in France and then worked to establish the community in Korea, where the early priorities included securing a stable presence and forming new members. Within this development, Masan became one of the important places for the formation of the Korean male Carmelite community.

A novitiate was opened in Masan in 1989. Around the same period, the Korean Discalced Carmelite community developed into a delegation directly under the superior general, while the Masan formation house served as a place where new members were trained in Carmelite prayer and common life. The present “Masan Monastery” listed in the Catholic directory stands in continuity with this Masan community, and together with the retreat house at the same address it brings monastic life and spiritual ministry to the faithful into one setting.

The Korean male Carmelite community continued to develop institutionally. Catholic Times records that it became a delegation monastery in 2000, a semi-province in 2001, and a province in 2009. The history of the Masan monastery is intertwined with this broader growth: beginning with its role as a house of formation and continuing today as a center that combines religious community life with retreat ministry.
