About this place

Gajwa-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the second area of the Jinju District of the Diocese of Masan. The Catholic directory records its establishment on August 29, 2010, and names St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea's first Catholic priest, as its patron. Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community activities are centered on the church on Gaeyang-ro 6beon-gil in Jinju.

Although it is a relatively young parish, it began as an independent community with a newly built church. With St. Andrew Kim Taegon as patron and Marian devotion represented in the church, it serves as a local place of liturgy, prayer, and fellowship for Catholics in the southern part of Jinju.

History & origins

Gajwa-dong Parish was created from Manggyeong-dong Parish as the Catholic community in the Jinju area expanded. Construction of the new church began with a groundbreaking ceremony on October 18, 2009. On August 29, 2010, about 700 Catholics gathered in the new church for the first Mass of the newly established parish. The same date is recorded in the Catholic directory as the parish's official establishment date.

The church was completed on September 2, 2010, and dedicated by the diocesan bishop on October 23 of that year. The diocesan record also notes that statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Andrew Kim Taegon were blessed before the dedication Mass.

Gajwa-dong is therefore a case in which construction of a new church and creation of a new parish proceeded almost together. The community separated from Manggyeong-dong Parish and established its own liturgical space and pastoral structure, forming the foundation of today's parish.
