Gajo Mission Station is a Catholic mission station of the Diocese of Masan in Gajo-myeon, Geochang-gun, connected with Geochang Parish. The Catholic directory confirms the present mission station and its address, while a 2023 diocesan record of Geochang Parish's 83rd anniversary shows Gajo Mission Station participating as part of the parish community.
For generations, Gajo has provided Catholics in the rural eastern part of Geochang with a nearby place to maintain their faith. Though smaller than a parish, it has enduring meaning as a local root of the Church where prayer, mission-station worship, and community fellowship have been sustained over time.
History & origins
The beginnings of Gajo Mission Station reach back to the 1880s. According to the Catholic Peace Broadcasting newspaper, Catholics from areas such as Sangju and Gimcheon in North Gyeongsang settled in Bakam-ri, Gabuk-myeon, Geochang, and formed a community. For many years they held mission-station prayers in private homes; in 1984 a believer donated a pig shed, which was converted into a chapel.
To improve the difficult conditions, the community began raising funds for a new chapel in 1986. After years of saving, a major donation from Catholics outside the area, together with support from the Diocese of Masan and Geochang Parish, made it possible to begin construction in March 2002.
After about six months of work, the new mission station at the time in Haepyeong-ri, Gabuk-myeon, was dedicated on September 3, 2002, with Bishop Ahn Myeong-ok presiding. The current Catholic directory lists an address on Masang 4-gil in Gajo-myeon. Public sources do not establish when or how the community moved between those locations, so the 2002 building should not automatically be identified with the present address.
