About this place
Gaeum-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Changwon District in the Diocese of Masan, a community that took root as Changwon developed as an industrial city. After a redevelopment settlement, the diocese reported that the parish moved to a temporary worship space while rebuilding its church; the temporary chapel was blessed on December 3, 2023. In 2024 the diocese also announced the groundbreaking Mass for the new church.
The address registered in the current package is likewise marked as the temporary church address. Even during reconstruction, the parish continues Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life, so its present situation reflects a long-established community in the midst of transition to a new church building.
History & origins
The roots of Gaeum-dong Parish go back to the spring of 1955, when six or seven Catholics began gathering for mission-station prayers at a believer's home near the Dudomi market in Sangnam-myeon. Lacking a formal chapel, the community consulted with Jinhae Jungang-dong Parish in 1957 and acquired the former Nam-myeon youth night-school building. In December 1968 it formally began as Sangnam Mission Station in a building of about twenty pyeong.
As the number of Catholics grew and the community became more self-supporting, it ended roughly two decades as a mission station and was raised to parish status on July 5, 1977. The diocesan history records that the new parish initially began under the name Yongji-dong Parish. It later became one of the established communities from which the Catholic presence in the growing Changwon area expanded.
A major recent turning point has been the reconstruction of the church. The community moved to a temporary chapel in 2023 and celebrated its blessing on December 3, while a groundbreaking Mass for the new church was announced in 2024. The parish's history thus runs from a small mission community to an independent parish and now to a community preparing a new church building.
