About this place

Daebang-dong Catholic Church is a parish in Area 1 of the Changwon District of the Diocese of Masan, serving Catholics in Daebang-dong and the surrounding large residential area of Seongsan-gu, Changwon. The Catholic directory names St. Francis Xavier as its patron. Located among dense apartment complexes and residential neighborhoods, it has the clear character of a parish centered on everyday urban life, connecting local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities.

St. Francis Xavier is associated with evangelization and missionary witness, a patronal identity that fits a parish founded in a rapidly growing new urban district. The church is more than a place large enough to gather residents from a broad neighborhood; it is a center for forming Catholic relationships and community within a newly developed city environment. Daebang-dong today shows how a parish born during urban expansion can become a stable part of the religious life of the area. The diocesan history explicitly points to apartment development and population growth as the background to the church, making Daebang-dong a place where Changwon’s urban expansion and parish development were closely linked. The parish today shows how that newly formed residential district matured into a stable Catholic community.

History & origins

The origins of Daebang-dong Parish are closely connected with the rapid growth of residential districts in southern Changwon. As apartment complexes and new housing increased around Daebang-dong, the Catholic population of Gaeum-dong Parish also grew, creating a need for another church. On January 31, 1998, during the pastorate of Father Abraham Heo Seong-hak, Gaeum-dong Parish acquired the site that became the foundation of the present Daebang-dong church, and parish lay leaders began preparing the building project in earnest.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 5, 1999, and a church-building committee was organized. Through parishioner fundraising and community effort, the church was completed on December 13 of that year. Bishop Michael Park Jeong-il presided at the dedication of the new church on December 29. The sequence is notable because a liturgical space for the growing local Catholic community was completed before the new parish was formally separated.

The current Catholic directory records January 18, 2000, as the establishment date of Daebang-dong Parish. Its development can therefore be traced from land acquisition in 1998, through construction and dedication in 1999, to formal establishment as an independent parish in 2000. The history illustrates how the mother parish anticipated the pastoral needs of a rapidly expanding apartment district, created the physical and communal foundations first, and then formed a separate parish structure.

A notable feature of the Daebang-dong case is that construction of the church and establishment of the parish did not occur as a single act but in stages. The Gaeum-dong community first secured the land and completed a church, so the local Catholic community already had a functioning liturgical space when the independent parish was formally established. This sequence shows a pastoral strategy that anticipated population growth and changes in the urban residential area.
